This kayak paddle, extra long for solo paddling a canoe (wider than a kayak)is called the "angler" model. It moves my 15-ft canoe splendidly. The manufacturer is Bending Branches, justifiably a leader in the paddle industry.
The 2-piece shaft is handily printed with a 40-inch ruler (centimeters on the opposite side)and the port blade has a curled notch, meant to snag a fishing-doer's leader and, with a twist, release a hooked fish. That part must have seemed like a good idea at design time, but it wasn't. The notch is a nuisance, especially to fly fishermen whose lines are made with a secret gene that compels them to snag anything and everything they can. The notch is a perfect target for that. When you're paddling thru vegetation, it also snags stems.
As a fish releaser, the notch is useful only if the 2-piece paddle is taken apart. Otherwise, it's too long and awkward for that purpose, which is easily met with a nimbler hand tool.
Other than that, the Slice very well serves its purpose for a solo canoeman by giving you two strokes for every one you would take with a canoe paddle. I cover a lot more distance with it, and without the adjustment stroke of a canoe paddle (to keep the track straight) I can fight a headwind more efficiently, with much less fatigue. In tight spots like mangrove tunnels and narrow creeks the extra length can be a liability. Rather than keep taking it apart and putting it back together,I supplement it with a small canoe paddle-- 52 inches long-- which is great for very shallow or tight-fitting waters and quick adjustments. Sum: If you paddle a canoe solo the long kayak paddle is a great idea and the ruler on the shaft is a nice touch, but the notch in the blade isn't.
The Slice Glass Angler paddle is a great paddle for taking fishing. In the paddle blade it has a dehooking cut out. That way you dont have to lean far over your kayak and give your self a chance for you to fall in. You can grab the paddle by one end and slide it onto your caught line and dehook it easily. The paddle is a little heavier if you use it all day long but if your fishing most of the time then this is for you.
